It’s amazing – like watching somebody flower. He wants to provide for his son and give him everything. He is a new man – a proper family man!
Before release from prison, support needs are assessed for the imprisoned parent and their family members. We liaise with other prison departments and other specialist support to ensure all needs are met. This can include substance use, accommodation, mental health, finance, benefits, education, training and employment. We also have access to dedicated family interventions as well as enabling quality time with families on family days, school showcase and lounge interventions.
In the community, post release, we can help with accommodation, attending housing appointments, applications for financial support etc. We can also help with CV writing, applying for jobs, funding opportunities.
‘We also work directly with children to help them explore their emotions and understand their situation. In addition, we work with schools to help them to understand what the children are experiencing when they have a parent in prison.
Our mentors also provide advocacy at meetings including social services and Probation.
